D-limonene will be useful for you to dissolve HIPS-type 3D filaments. It will be useful especially when you use a dual extruder 3D printer, since you just need to use HIPS or a soluble filament with one of the two extruders in order to dissolve it later!
You can thus obtain an even cleaner result and make objects or it was too difficult to remove the support in a few hours!
SMART MATERIAL – D-Limonene 0.5L
Limonene is a natural substance extracted from citrus peel oil and gives them the characteristic smell. It belongs to the group of terpenes, especially limonoids, which constitute one of the broadest classes of functional foods and phytonutrients, functioning as antioxidants.
Limonene is flammable at a temperature above 48ºC, but not toxic. Its solubility in water is very low, with a density of 0.84g/ml. It should be stored in a cool, dry and well-ventilated place, protected from direct sunlight and in a perfectly closed container to prevent its oxidation.
In recent years, it has acquired particular importance due to its demand as a biodegradable solvent in the 3D printing sector, especially for the dissolution of PS or HIPS substrates. Besides industrial solvents, it also has applications as an aromatic component and is widely used to synthesize new compounds.
Due to the concentration level of the product, we recommend that a material dissolution test be performed before 3D printing of the part/support assembly, to ensure that the limonene does not affect/dilute the final part.
If the support used is pigmented PS or HIPS (black, red, etc …) there is a risk that the pigments adhere and stain the final part when the support is diluted.
